Happiness brought by cricket

Kathmandu. Nepali cricket has once again brought happiness to the faces of all Nepalis. Nepal has been selected for the World Cup to be held in 2026 before two matches in the ICC T-20 World Cup Asia and East Asia Pacific Qualifiers held in Oman. This success was essential for Nepal. Nepal, which is currently in the news only because of its political instability, has been discussed in the world for a good reason.

Nepali cricket must be thanked for this. Nepal will play in the ICC T20 World Cup for the third time overall and for the second time in a row. The 10th edition of the T20 World Cup is being jointly organized in India and Sri Lanka in February-March 2026. Nepal is the only undefeated team in the tournament. After defeating Japan and Kuwait in the group stage, Nepal also defeated the home team Oman, United Arab Emirates, UAE and Qatar in the Super Six. Now, if they beat relatively weak Samoa on Friday, Nepal will become the champion.

Therefore, we can say that Nepal is on the verge of winning the trophy of this global selection competition. Nepal played the T20 World Cup for the first time in 2014. Nepal unexpectedly impressed the world by winning three matches in its first participation in the World Cup. After that, Nepali cricket fans always expected that Nepal will play the next World Cup but it took 10 years for Nepal to play the next World Cup.

Nepal played the last World Cup in 2024 in America and West Indies. Nepal was also discussed in the World Cup. Nepali cricket has now got an opportunity to show its potential again on the stage of the World Cup.

It is certain that Nepal will remain as a team worth watching in the upcoming World Cup due to their performance in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers and the fact that they made history by winning the T-20 series against the two-time world champions West Indies. Nepal Cricket Association, the highest organization of domestic cricket, also deserves praise for its exceptional performance in the World Cup Qualifiers. Can made really remarkable preparations this time as a preparation for the World Cup. Nepal trained in India for the World Cup qualifiers. After that, the Nepal cricket team was on a tour of Australia for about a month.

In that visit, Nepal played in the Top&T20 series in which 11 world class teams participated. This month, CAN organized a bilateral series with the two-time world champion West Indies in the UAE as a preparation for the World Cup qualifiers. This was the first time that Nepal played a bilateral series with a full member of the ICC. Nepal achieved a great achievement by winning the first series against a big nation. Based on these results, the Nepali team went to Oman with high morale to play the World Cup qualifiers. Especially the series win against West Indies, which is recognized as a Test, has increased the confidence of Nepali players that they can beat any team. Needless to say, Nepal presented itself as the number one team in the World Cup qualifiers.

The way Can planned to set the difficult path to the World Cup also showed Can's ability and foresight. In the past, it was said that the success of Nepali cricket was only possible due to the hard work, sacrifice and penance of the coaches and players. Can was unstable when Nepal played the World Cup for the first time. CAN was banned by ICC in 2016 but now CAN has become an exemplary association of Nepal. This year's success is not only because of the players and coaches, but also because of Can's management agility, planning and foresight. The goal now is more clear to win the upcoming World Cup against a big cricketing nation, which is certainly not easy. However, Can has about four months.

At this time, it is necessary for CAN to proceed in a more planned manner. For Nepali cricket, a cricket series with a stronger country than itself can be the best initiative to prepare for the World Cup. Associate nations have no history of sustaining success for a long time. Countries like Kenya, Bermuda, which have played the World Cup, are vivid examples of this, but Nepal has not been included in this list by the world. World Cricket has taken Nepal as a team that can get Test recognition. Nepal has a culture of cricket. Therefore, now along with CAN, the government also has a big responsibility to protect the Nepali cricket culture and make it more sophisticated in the World Cup.
