Main News Image

Kathmandu. Dhanurmas Puja was performed at Pashupatinath Mool Temple on Thursday night while the Sun was in Sagittarius. The Sun is in Sagittarius throughout the month of January. It is a tradition to perform Dhanurmas Puja at Pashupatinath main temple every year in the month of Pus. Before the Dhanurmas Puja, Pashupatinath was bathed with hot water on Thursday morning to protect it from the cold, Executive Director of Pashupati Kshetra Development Fund, Subhash Chandra Joshi informed Rasas.

As it gets cold from Bala Chaturdashi onwards, it is a tradition to bathe Pashupatinath with hot water. There is a Vedic Sanatani tradition of feeding Khichdi along with Dhanurmas Puja to protect Pashupatinath from the cold during Meenpachas, which also lives in the water to avoid the cold.

After the Dhanurmas Puja, Khichdi made from Gedagudi is served to Pashupatinath. Pashupatinath is observed on Friday after Dhanurmas Puja throughout the night on Thursday. There is also a religious belief that on fasting days, Mahadev went to Shivpuri Hill and slept in the sun with mustard oil. In this belief, mustard oil is applied to Pashupatinath this morning. In the evening, aarti is performed in the belief that the sun will return from Shivpuri hill. Regular worship is done from Saturday morning.
