Livelihood raised from goat rearing
Myagdi. Kul Bahadur Pun of Mangala Rural Municipality-2 Hidi has started earning lakhs of rupees annually from the farm he started with two goats four years ago. The 50-year-old has become self-employed and self-sufficient by operating a managed goat farm in the village instead of foreign employment and traditional farming. "In the farm that started with two Mau goats at home, now the number of Pathapathi, Khasiboka and Mau goats has reached 48", he said, "We sell around 15 to 20 goats annually."
Pun said that after starting goat rearing, it became easier to run the household and educate the children. He was also involved in social work and used to earn his living by traditional farming and animal husbandry before starting goat rearing. His wife has also helped him in goat rearing. Pun said that 18-month to two-year-old Khasi can be priced at 15,000 to 20,000 depending on the weight. Khasibo for meat is sold in Babiachaur, Tatopani and Beni markets. They also take goats and goats to offer sacrifices in religious places. Farmers rearing around Khasiboka also come to buy Pathapathi.
Pun started the business by establishing a Hidi Goat Farm in 2078. By improving the breed of local Jamunapari goats, they raised goats of advanced Boer breed to produce goats. There is another experience that it is easy to increase income because the improved breed from Boar goats will grow faster and gain more weight. The Veterinary Hospital and Animal Services Expert Center provided a subsidy of 5 lakhs for the construction of goat cages in the said farm. Mangala rural municipality has provided one goat of advanced Boer breed with 75 percent subsidy. Pun said that the loan of 10 lakhs incurred during the establishment of the farm has been paid off by selling Khasiboka and Pathapathi.
Inside the goat cage, there are separate rooms for keeping goats, goats, goats and kids of different age groups. Pun, who reared goats through the Badhuva system, cultivated perennial grass for fodder. Pun said that the expansion of grass farming and goat rearing will be continued by organizing it further.
