In Bangladesh, after 35 years, a man becomes the prime minister, the constitution is being amended
Kathmandu. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has won a landslide victory in the general elections held on Thursday in Bangladesh. The BNP won 209 of the 299 seats, more than the 150 required for a majority. This is a two-thirds majority. So far the results of 286 seats have been announced.
The 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami has won 70 seats so far. Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman has won 15 seats in Dhaka. BNP is going to form the government in the country after almost 20 years. Sheikh Hasina's Awami League was in power from 2008 to 2024.
With this victory, former prime minister Khaleda Zia's son and BNP president Tariq Rehman is almost certain to become the prime minister. Tariq contested in two seats and won both. After 17 years of exile, he returned to the country last December.
