Kathmandu. The United Nations is cutting the number of peacekeepers deployed in missions in warring countries by 25 percent due to budget shortages. This will have some effect on the economic and military diplomacy of countries that send peacekeepers. With that UN decision, the number of peacekeepers that Nepal is sending will also decrease. However, Nepal will remain in the list of the largest countries to introduce peacekeepers through the UN.
More than 120,000 peacekeepers from more than 120 countries are working round the clock to establish peace in various warring countries of the world in 14 missions through the UN. The UN's main source of funding for peacekeeping military operations is earmarked contributions from member states. The number of peacekeepers is going to be reduced due to lack of budget as the financial support received from some member countries has not arrived on time and will be available from some. Anupjang Thapa, director general of Nepali Army's war operations, said that he has received information about the plan to reduce the number of peacekeepers by 25 percent.
