Congress promises to make tourism the backbone of the national economy

Kathmandu. With the goal of making the tourism sector the main base of the national economy, employment and entrepreneurship, the Nepali Congress has announced a detailed promise on sustainable tourism development. The party said that within the next 10 years, it has set a target of bringing in 3 million foreign tourists annually and increasing the contribution of the tourism sector to 15 (20) percent of the gross domestic product.
The Congress has resolved to establish the country as the best tourism destination in the world by using the natural, cultural and spiritual diversity of Nepal. According to the party, the Open Skies Policy of 1992, the environment for investment in private airlines, campaigns like 'Visit Nepal Year 1998' and air and tourism policy reforms were initiated by the Congress.
The party has said that to strengthen Nepal's international identity as a country of Buddha, Mount Everest and ancient civilization, it will pay special attention to the construction of Janakpur (Lumbini-Kathmandu) spiritual corridor, development of religious tourism circuit and protection of heritage.
