Today is the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery
Kathmandu. International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is being celebrated today in different countries of the world. The purpose of this day is to spread global awareness against modern forms of slavery, including human trafficking, forced labour, sexual exploitation, child labour, forced marriage and forced recruitment of children into armed conflict. This day is celebrated every year in commemoration of the day on December 2, 1949, when the United Nations passed the General Assembly Resolution on the Prevention of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation.
According to the United Nations, 50 million people around the world are still at risk of modern slavery. Most of these women and children are forced to do forced labour. Some communities are still at serious risk of exploitation due to caste discrimination, poverty, social exclusion and unequal treatment. It is found that migrant and vulnerable workers are engaged in various economic exploitation from domestic work, construction, agriculture, textile industry to sex sector.
The International Labor Organization has stressed the need for cooperation between the government, civil society and communities to end slavery and modern exploitation, emphasizing the rescue, rehabilitation, justice and long-term security of victims.
