Kathmandu. Today, International Health Day is being celebrated with various programs. It is going to be celebrated formally for the first time after the United Nations announced this day on the initiative of Nepal. With the aim of promoting overall health, happiness and a balanced lifestyle, the United Nations General Assembly declared April 15 as International Health Day.

The proposal presented by Nepal was approved by the General Assembly on February 26. The day aims to inspire everyone towards affordable, accessible and inclusive health practices. Emphasis on prevention over treatment, adoption of a healthy lifestyle, and a people-centered health system are believed to contribute to saving lives, reducing health expenses, and controlling preventable diseases.

The United Nations has acknowledged the importance of traditional knowledge and culture of indigenous and local communities and has stated that evidence-based traditional treatment methods will help strengthen the health system.
