The road construction of the southern section is in the final stage
Kathmandu. The construction work of the southern road section under the East-West highway has reached its final stage. The project claims that the concrete slope in this section will last for at least 30 years. According to Chudaraj Dhakal, project director of ADB's project directorate under the road department, keeping in mind the geological structure of the valley, the risk of landslides and the increasing traffic volume, concrete slope technology has been adopted instead of asphalt.
He said that if the construction of the road is done according to the design and the standards including load control are implemented effectively, the life of the slope can reach up to 40 years. He expressed the belief that this will end the suffering of the commuters on the lower section of the road for years.
According to Dhakal, the carrying capacity of the road has been determined up to 10 tons on a single wheel. He said that the road has been designed based on the traffic volume of the next 20 to 30 years and that even if 12,000 to 20,000 vehicles operate daily, the structure of the road will not be affected.
