The Press Council does not list online media

Main News Image

Kathmandu. Press Council Nepal has decided not to list online media from now on. The council issued a notice on Sunday and informed that this decision was implemented due to the new legal amendment. According to the council, according to the previous legal provisions, under the first amendment 2074 of the 'Online Media Operation Guideline, 2073', it was monitoring the online media's record keeping and compliance with journalistic code of conduct.

However, the recently passed Act to amend some Nepal Acts, 2082 has amended the 'Printing and Publishing Act, 2048' and correspondingly, the 'Second Amendment Regulation on Printing and Publishing, 2082' has been published in the Nepal Gazette and has come into effect. The council clarified that the legal basis has changed with this amendment. According to the new law, since the Press Council has not been given the right to record and list online media, this work will no longer be done through the Council.

The Press Council of Nepal started the listing process of online media by issuing a public notice on 16th July 2070. After that, the Government of Nepal issued the 'Online Media Operation Directory, 2073' on 7th Chait, 2073, and according to that, the listing work was going on continuously.
