Support bans on social media use
Kathmandu. Many people in Australia have supported the federal government's ban on the use of social media by children under the age of 16. According to a survey of 1,598 people conducted by Roy Morgan Research on behalf of Monash University, 79 percent supported this ban. This ban came into effect on Wednesday.
Support varied according to age group. Support is 72 percent among 18-24-year-olds, 80 percent among 50-64-year-olds, and 87 percent among over-65s. According to Professor Mark Andrevik of Monash University, "the ban is primarily aimed at some powerful foreign platforms, which track young users and profit through advertising."
According to him, these apps are accused of exploiting young users through random advertisements, misinformation and psychologically influencing algorithms. Supporters say the ban will reduce the risk to young people's mental health, threats, extremist content, misinformation and sex offenders. Opponents have alleged that it interferes with parental rights and hinders social connections.
The move has received bipartisan support and attracted global attention, as other countries are considering similar legislation.
