Kathmandu. Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport and Urban Development Minister Kulman Ghising has inspected the Tanakpur Barrage at Brahmadev in Kanchanpur. While inspecting the Tanakpur Barrage under the third phase of Mahakali Irrigation Project of National Pride on Wednesday morning, Minister Ghising said that necessary initiatives and coordination are being taken with India to release water in the canal for irrigation facilities towards Nepal.

He said that the issue of water release is being continuously discussed with the Indian side in the mechanisms of the two countries and in the bilateral meetings and correspondence is also going on. He also expressed his belief that since the main canal and branch and branch canals have been built on the Nepal side to provide immediate irrigation facilities to about five thousand hectares of drought-affected land in Kanchanpur, there will be a decision to release water from the Indian side. According to the integrated Mahakali treaty between Nepal and India, there is a provision for Nepal to get 300 cusecs of water in winter and 1000 cusecs in rainy season.
