Lakshmi Puja: Worship of wealth, religion and mother power
Kathmandu. Lakshmi Puja celebrated on the day of Kartik Krishna Aunsi is a very important festival for Hindus. Mata Lakshmi is worshiped not only as a symbol of wealth and prosperity, but also as a symbol of mother power, liberation and Bhukti. In the Rigveda, Lakshmi is described as the presiding deity of universal power and world welfare by saying 'Om Srishcha Te Lakshmisha Patnih'.
Goddess Lakshmi is considered to be not only the ruler of wealth but also the half-goddess of Vishnu and the maternal power that inspires dharma (righteousness). The mantra 'Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Matrurupena Sansthita' also highlights the motherly nature of the goddess. Conch, Kauda, Kamalgatta and Kesar etc. are worshiped. Lakshmi loves the light of lotus, gungal, sandalwood and lamp.
The special worship of Lakshmi Mata is done in the evening by lighting lamps in the courtyards and shops. Pujas are also performed on this day in industries, factories and commercial establishments. Lakshmi is worshiped right from business books to house shrines.
It is done by reciting Srisukta, Lakshmisukta, Gopal Sahasranama and Vishnu Sahasranamavali with seed mantras like 'Om Mahalakshmyai Cha Vidmahe, Vishnupriyai Dhimahi, Tanno Lakshmi Prachodayat' and staying awake all night. According to legend, on the day of Kartik Krishna Aunsi, Lord Sadashiva himself declared this day to be dedicated to Lakshmi. Therefore, it is believed that on this day in the evening, Lakshmi comes to visit the earth riding on her vehicle owl. Owl is worshiped as Lakshmi's vehicle and Kubera as her secretary.
