Increasing Nepalese access to financial services: significant improvement in the index

Main News Image

Kathmandu. There has been an encouraging improvement in access, use and quality of financial services in Nepal. According to the financial inclusion index released by Nepal Rastra Bank on Sunday, the overall index has increased from zero.47 to zero.53 in the financial year 2024-25.

The report published by the National Bank's Financial Inclusion and Customer Protection Division has shown that this progress is possible due to the expansion of services and the increasing use of digital media. According to the bank, the expansion of access to financial services and the improvement in service quality seem to have led to steady and comprehensive progress in inclusion.

This report has been prepared based on the scale of zero to one by adopting the method of human development index. It is based on 55 different indicators under three dimensions of access, use and quality.

According to the report, the access index has reached 0.53, which confirms the expansion of the network of financial institutions and digital service centers across the country. Similarly, due to the increased involvement of the public in services such as banking and digital payments, the usage index has reached zero.54, while the quality index has reached zero.50 due to the transparency of the service and the improvement in customer experience.

The Central Bank has mentioned that this success has been achieved due to the increase in financial literacy and the strengthening of consumer protection mechanisms. Stating that policy initiatives, digital innovation and regulatory reforms have had a positive impact, the National Bank has emphasized that the digital infrastructure should be strengthened in the future.

The bank believes that this progress will be sustainable only if the promotion of financial literacy and consumer-centric services can be continued. This report indicates that the future of digital banking in the Nepali economy is bright.
