End of Yunus era in Bangladesh, Rahman sworn in today
Kathmandu. The interim leader of Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, has resigned from his post on Monday before handing over power to the elected government. The 85-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner Yunus, announcing the end of his tenure, expressed his belief that the new government will protect democracy and fundamental rights.
After Sheikh Hasina's government was ousted in August 2024, Yunus assumed the interim leadership. During his farewell speech, he said that the duties of the interim government have come to an end from today. The youth of our country freed the country from the grip of evil rulers and it was a day of great liberation.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has won a big victory in the elections held last week. Yunus congratulated BNP leader Tariq Rehman and said that the leadership of the next government has fallen on his shoulders. According to the Election Commission, the BNP alliance has won 212 seats and the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance has won 77 seats in the 300-member parliament.
