Deputy Speaker's announcement to boycott dowry marriages
Kathmandu. Deputy Speaker Ruvi Kumari Thakur has announced that she will not participate in any marriage where dowry is transacted. During the wedding season, she expressed her displeasure through social media that "dowry-free marriage" was not mentioned in the invitation letter she received. She expressed her concern saying that the society is still not free from evils like dowry.
She said that not only taking and giving dowry, but also accepting marriage based on it, participating in events or receiving feasts are socially unacceptable and legally punishable. He said that such practice directly affects women's respect, equality and rights. Emphasizing that social change should start from behavior, she mentioned that even with small efforts, big transformation is possible.
