Canada welcomes offer to become 'associate member' of EU
Kathmandu. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has welcomed the European Union's proposal to make Canada the first 'associate member'. He pointed out the need for more cooperation between Canada and Europe in areas such as defense, critical minerals and energy security. Addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Thursday, Carney said Canada and Europe will be "stronger together" amid geopolitical changes.
His statement came a day after the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, proposed to open the door to 'associate membership' of the EU for Canada. There is currently no such membership arrangement in the EU. US President Donald Trump previously called the proposal "ridiculous" and warned that he would take it as a hostile move and impose "very serious taxes" on Europe.
