7.1 magnitude earthquake hits Malaysia

Kathmandu. A powerful earthquake of 7.1 magnitude has occurred in the Sulu Sea of Malaysia. According to the US Geological Survey, an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 occurred at 12:57 a.m. local time on Monday. Although the epicenter of the earthquake was under the sea some distance from the coastal area of Sabah, its depth was found to be very high, i.e. 620 km.
According to Sabah's Warun Control and Rescue Department, no reports of damage to physical infrastructure or human casualties have been received so far. Officials have increased surveillance on beaches and high-risk areas.
