Unregistered social networks should be closed again: Prithvisubba Gurung

Main News Image

Kathmandu. CPN UML Deputy Secretary General and former Communications Minister Prithvisubba Gurung has said that social networks with unregistered metas should be closed again in Nepal. In a program organized by Press Chowtari Nepal on Monday, he clarified that all companies doing business in Nepal should fully obey the laws of Nepal.

Unregistered social networks were closed in Nepal when Gurung was the Minister of Communications, but they were reopened after the 'Jenji' movement. He claimed that even if the networks that are out of regulation are opened due to special circumstances, they will definitely be closed in the future.

According to him, even small businesses in Nepal should register and pay taxes, but it is unacceptable for big tech companies with billions of transactions not to register. He accused the company of neglecting Nepal as a 'small country' despite giving 13 months time. Gurung mentioned that regulation of social networks is mandatory and said that steps should be taken only by providing alternatives while shutting down unregistered foreign platforms. He is of the opinion that the state should strictly regulate this sector as alternative apps are also being opened now.
