Kathmandu. The Tharu community used to dance Dhumri all night on the last day of Pus, the day before Maghi. It was a custom to gather at the house of the Tharu community leader or Mahatwa and sing and dance dhumri songs throughout the night. It was customary to sing, dance and burn fire all night. "This is our culture", Tharu leader Asharam Chaudhary said, "Dancing all night and singing the same song in the morning, we used to go to the river and take a bath." After bathing, it was customary for the Mahatwa to inoculate everyone and return to the Mahatwa's house.

Tharu Agua Choudhary said that after reaching the Mahatwa's house, everyone goes to their respective homes, but this custom has been disappearing lately. "Our ancestors used to adopt this custom," he said, "but now the new generation has left it behind." Fullaram Chaudhary of Tulsipur-18 said that this custom has been disappearing for 20-25 years. Earlier, they used to dance like this. But now I stopped dancing', he said.

Ramsharan Chaudhary, President of Model Bhuyarthan Tulsipur, said that the new generation is not aware of this dance. According to him, this dance awakens the sense of unity of the Tharu community and it is going to be protected.
