Gautam, who started her political journey from student politics, entered the race of joint general minister with long organizational experience, central responsibilities of the party and parliamentary role.
Active in politics since the 2046 public movement, Gautam's political journey started from the student movement. She became active in politics through Nepal Vidyarthi Sangh, a student organization close to the Nepali Congress, and held various important responsibilities in student leadership.
