'Middleman's game' in banana prices, farmers' demand to fix minimum support price

Kathmandu. The Federation of Nepal Banana Producers has demanded the government to set the minimum support price for bananas. Through a press conference held on Tuesday, the federation said that such an arrangement is necessary to ensure fair prices to farmers. According to the federation, the retail price of bananas in the market has reached 350-400 rupees. But farmers are forced to sell local 'Malbhog' bananas at Rs 70-85 and hybrid varieties at Rs 50-60.
In this situation, the farmers are not getting proper income as consumers are forced to pay high prices, according to the federation. Their conclusion is that price imbalance has increased due to excessive intervention of middlemen in the market. The federation has also requested the government to make the agricultural insurance system simple, fast and effective and to provide quality tissue culture plants.
