Kaag Tihar: Worship and symbol of Yamraj's messenger

Main News Image

Kathmandu. Tihar begins with Kaag Tihar. Crow is considered as the messenger of Yamaraj and it is believed that it conveys information about human actions. According to the Puranas, Mother Parvati took the form of a crow and delivered a message when Lord Shiva was lost at Shivpuri or Bagdwar.  This is why crows are worshipped. Crows are fed rice, dal, flowers and sesame seeds on sal leaves. Sesame seeds are considered to be a symbol of protection from the disaster of Yamaraj.

Even now, in the Kageshwari temple on the north side of the Kathmandu valley, a golden crow is also performed on the day of Kage Ashtami or Bhadrakrishna Ashtami. The crow and the cuckoo seem to be the same, but how much the cuckoo is loved, the crow is so unpleasant. Because he is a messenger who brings the unpleasant deeds done by humans to Yamraj, Dr. Dr. Uttam Upadhyay Neupane says.
