Government's preparation to appoint ambassadors through open competition

Kathmandu. For the first time, the government of Nepal has started an initiative to appoint ambassadors through open competition. Currently, ambassadors are being appointed from among the officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and on the basis of the recommendations of the ruling parties. However, the current government has started the initiative of appointing ambassadors through open competition, breaking the tradition of the past.
According to sources in the Secretariat of Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal, a certain number of advertisements will be opened for that purpose and those selected from the competition will be appointed ambassadors. According to the Ambassador Appointment Guidelines, 2075, at least 50 percent of the total ambassador posts should be filled by career diplomats from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the remaining 50 percent by political appointments.
