Genji movement report: Security apparatus in court on 23rd shooting, commission silent on 24th incident

Kathmandu. The report of the Gauribahadur Karki-led commission to investigate the Genji movement on August 23 and 24 focused mainly on the clashes and shootings that took place in the Nayabaneshwar area on August 23. Sources said that in the report submitted to Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Sunday, the security strategy of the day, police deployment and the situation of firing were mentioned in detail.

In the report, it has been concluded that the security mechanism did not even take normal precautions during the performance control. After the protestors reached the Parliament premises and started vandalizing, instead of finding other means of crowd control, they fired directly, and it has been pointed out as a serious security lapse. During this, questions have been raised about the role of the then Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli, the then Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and other officials in the central and district security structures, although the report on political responsibility is said to have more explanatory comments than clear evidence.

On the other hand, sources claim that the report is relatively unclear about incidents like arson, vandalism, looting and jailbreak that took place in various places of the capital on August 24. It is said that the Commission has not been able to make a concrete conclusion about what caused the situation to flare up in those incidents, whether it was planned or accidental, and it has only indicated that some issues require further investigation.
