Kathmandu. The selection process for the next Secretary General of the United Nations has been unusually limited this time. Compared to the open and spirited competition between 13 candidates in 2016, only four contenders have come forward for formal presentation. According to analysts, this contraction is not just a coincidence, but a direct indication of increasing polarization in world politics, diplomatic risks and a weakening multilateral system.
The term of the current Secretary General Antonio Guterres ends on December 31. As part of the process to select his successor, four candidates will present their views to the member states at the United Nations General Assembly.
