Floods and landslides kill at least 84 in Indonesia
Kathmandu. At least 84 people have died and dozens are missing due to floods and landslides on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, rescue officials said on Friday. Dozens of people have died in Indonesia's neighboring countries Malaysia and Thailand due to disasters caused by heavy rains. In North Sumatra, as of Friday, the death toll has reached 62 and 95 people have been injured, according to local police spokesperson Ferry Walintukan.
At least 65 people missing due to the surge are being searched for, AFP reported, quoting spokesperson Feri Valintukan. According to the local disaster agency, at least 22 people have died and 12 people are missing in West Sumatra. Walintukan said authorities in North Sumatra were "focusing on evacuation and relief efforts. In North Sumatra, communications were cut off in some areas. More than 30 people had died in the hardest-hit town of Sibolga," he said.
