FATF review: Nepal is still on the "grey list" in the case of money laundering

Kathmandu. The Financial Action Task Force-FATF, an international body that monitors money laundering cases, has stated that Nepal is still on the watch list, i.e. the 'grey list'. According to the statement released after the fourth full meeting of FATF that was held on Friday, Nepal has continued its reform efforts but it is still insufficient and further reforms are needed.
In February 2025, Nepal made a high-level political commitment to strengthen the effectiveness of its anti-money laundering system with the FATF and the Asia Pacific Group APG. Even though some steps have been taken to improve it, FATF has pointed out the need for Nepal to start strategic improvement efforts and make a clear action plan and implement it.
Similarly, the FATF has also mentioned that there is a need for a clear understanding of the risks of investing in money laundering and terrorist activities. It has suggested that commercial banks, cooperatives, casinos, jewelery shops, real estate transactions and other areas should be inspected based on risk and improvement measures should be taken, illegal transactions such as hundi should be identified and prevented, the capacity of the agency to look after money laundering cases should be enhanced and its investigation and prosecution process should be streamlined.
