Elections are impossible without party support and participation: Prime Minister Karki

Main News Image

Kathmandu. Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said that it is her constitutional obligation and unwavering political commitment to the people to complete the election of members of the House of Representatives on February 21. Addressing the parties in the all-party meeting, Prime Minister Karki also said that political parties are the carriers of democracy and without the party's support, cooperation and participation, the conception of elections would be impossible. In the meeting, she said that the main task of her government is to complete the elections on February 21 and the elections will give a democratic outcome.

She said that there is no confusion on the constitutional stand of the government and the commitment regarding the necessity of elections is strong and clear. However, she said that even after the announcement of the election, the confusion in some political parties, the demand for the restoration of the parliament and the questioning of the legitimacy of the government could push the nation into the cycle of instability again.

She said, "Now, if the parliament takes a stand for restoration, that action will only confirm that it is trying to repeat the political accident of the past." Therefore, we should now focus the political debate on the way of the constitutional exit, i.e. elections.

Stating that political instability must be given a permanent solution through elections, she said that future generations will continue to examine us as to how honest we were towards the country and democracy at this sensitive time in history.
