Classical significance, mythology and method of today's Haritalika Teej fast

Main News Image

Kathmandu. Today Hindu women are celebrating Haritalika Teej by worshiping Lord Mahadev. It is a tradition to observe the fast of Haritalika Vrat Teej on the Tritiya Tithi of Bhadra Shukla Paksha. As mentioned by Maharishi Apastamba, Tritiya Tithi with Chaturthi is considered best for this fast. Haritalika Vrat should not be observed on the day of Yoga with Dwitiya Tithi.

On this day, married women fast for long life of their husbands and unmarried women fast for a suitable groom. Classically, it is a law that both men and women should do this fast, but in society, only women pray for the longevity of their husbands. There has been a religious belief that fasting and worshiping Shiva-Parvati on the day of Bhadra Shukla Tritiya will bring happiness, peace and well-being.

According to legend, Parvati, daughter of the Himalayas, performed severe penance at Gaurighat in Satya Yuga and got the boon of Mahadev as her husband. After her father Himalaya tried to get her married to Lord Vishnu against her will, Parvati told her friends about the problem.
