Celebrating the 117th birth anniversary of Mahakavi Devkota

Main News Image

Kathmandu. The 117th birth anniversary of the greatest poet of Nepali literature, Lakshmi Prasad Devkota, is being celebrated today by organizing various programs at home and abroad. Mahakavi Devkota was born in the year 1966 on the day of Katrtik Krishna Aunsi i.e. Lakshmi Puja in Dillibazar, Kathmandu. Devkota, who started writing poetry at the age of ten, has published many epics, short poems, essays, stories, plays, novels, songs, criticism and short poems. He contributed more than 100 works to Nepali literature. Through these works, Devkota introduced Nepal to the international level.

Devkota's 'Munamadan' Khandakavya, who started modern epic writing in Nepali literature, is the most sold book published in Nepali language so far. Humanism, love of nature and revolutionism are reflected in the works of Devkota, the promoter of the liberal and progressive trend in Nepali literature. A combination of Eastern and Western philosophies can be found in his creations.  It is believed that India's Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan compared Devkota alone to the combined form of India's great poets Sumitranandan Pant, Jaishankar Prasad and Suryakanta Nirala. Natya Samrat Balakrishna Sama said that Devkota was born three times along with 'Munamadan', 'Shakuntal' epic and 'Pagal' poem.

He also contributed significantly to the global promotion of Nepali literature by translating Nepali works into foreign languages and representing Nepal in various conferences held abroad. Mahakavi Devkota selected the essays of 15 prose writers like Francis Bacon, Charles Leash and published 'Prishad Prabhand Sangrah' in the year 1997. In 2016, when he was the Minister of Education and Autonomous Government, he implemented Nepali language as a compulsory subject throughout Nepal. Actively contributing to the establishment of the current Nepal Pragya-Pratishthan is an unforgettable gift of Devkota.
