After 16 years, the number of Chirkalis, a rare bird in the Kaligand basin, is 18 pairs
Myagdi. The number of rare birds Chirkalij has increased in the high mountain area around Kaligandaki river. According to a study conducted by the Nepal Ornithologists' Association, the number of chirkalis has increased this year compared to 16 years ago. The association recently conducted a study of chirkaliz in Ghasa, Leyte, Kunjo, Titital, Khanti, Zhipra Deurali of Thasang Rural Municipality of Mustang. The team that prepared the report of the study done on Mustang has come to Dhawalagiri Rural Municipality and Dhorpatan Sikar Reserve in Myagdi to study the situation of Chirkaliz. Virat Rajak, a researcher participating in the study team, said that in 2009, 18 pairs were found in those seven places where there were six pairs of chirkalis.
"In 2004, 17 and 11 pairs of Kalijis were found", he said, "After 2009, there was no study. During the study conducted this year after sixteen years, it has been found that the number of chirkaliz has increased in the upper region of Kaligandaki.
Researcher Rajak said that conservation education in the community, development of awareness, control of poachers, increased human and domestic animal activities around the habitat have helped in the increase in the number of chirkaliz. He says that people cut grass in Kharbari and Pakhobari, and when there is a grazing area for cattle, it is easy to find food because the bushes are removed, so it is a favorable environment for Chirkaliz to live.
It is considered favorable for Chirkaliz to destroy the bush when there is a fire when it is not flowering and to have plenty of food. Chait, Baisakh and Jeth Chirkaliz are the time for flowering, harvesting and chick hatching.
Chirkaliz is found at an altitude of 1,400 meters to 3,600 meters above sea level. It is not found in the lower coastal areas like the common Kalij. Researcher Keshav Chokhal informed that although this bird looks like a female Kalij at a glance, there are many differences.
