6 days festival started with Dhanteras
Mahottari Tihar Diwali, the second biggest festival of Nepali, has started from Friday. In the districts of Madhes including the ancient Mithila region, Dhanteras is celebrated by lighting lamps in the evening on the first day. The festival of Tihar, which is celebrated for five days from Kattik Krishna Trayodashi to Kattik Shukla Dwitiya of the lunar month, has been reduced to six days this time due to the change in dates.
According to the Mithila tradition, it is customary to worship Lakshmi by buying new metal utensils or jewelery and lighting a lamp in the evening on the day of Kattik Krishna Trayodashi. Mahesh Kumar Jha, a knower of Maithil rituals, informed that Dhanteras is going to be celebrated as Trayodashi starts before noon even though Dwadashi date is at sunrise on Friday.
